Resource Manage

Resource Manager is located in the RNC and works in close co-operation with Admission Control and
the Packet Scheduler. The main function of the Resource Manager is to allocate downlink spreading
code(s) when Admission Control or the Packet Scheduler requests it. Admission Control and the Packet
Scheduler provide the actual input for code allocation. The Resource Manager, in turn, informs the
Packet Scheduler about the resource situation.
As part of the channel allocation process, the Resource Manager allocates a spreading
(channellisation) code for each downlink connection. The Resource Manager allocates a spreading
code of the appropriate length (the higher the bit rate the shorter the code) for the connection in
question, provided that there are codes available. The Resource Manager can switch codes on the fly,
when the code tree becomes too fragmented (as illustrated in the next slide). The Resource Manager
is also responsible for allocating scrambling codes for the uplink connections. The Resource Manager
also takes care of releasing the allocated resources
